Stroads and Futons and KFC oh my!

A futon is a couch that can lay into a bed. It’s also a bed that can fold into a couch. It isnt a very good bed and it isnt a very good couch. It tries to be two things at once and ends up being bad at both.

Okay so stay with me.

Stroads. Ben, what the f#$k is a stroad? A stroad is a street road. A street to me, is a collection of shops and restaurants. Lots of foot traffic and life. A road is lanes of traffic, made for cars to drive down at speed with no stops, only exits. So a stroad is a street that has a road down the middle or a road with street things on the sides. A stroad tries to be both and in the process it’s not good at either one of them. You dont want to be walking down a street and have a lot of fast traffic. You dont want to drive down a road and have a lot of people walking causing slow car traffic. Are you still here?

A perfect community in my mind is one sprawling with life. Walkable stores and coffee shops. Bars and restaurants. Offices and apartments. Homes. Parks. This is where the streets would be. On the outskirts would be the roads. Fast flowing traffic with no stops. A simple point a to point b system with no street lights and weird shopping centers that have a KFC/Pizza hut combo next to an abandoned K-Mart.

Americas infrastructure is a giant f$#king futon covered in crumbs from the local KFC/Pizza hut combo. Are we too far gone? People flock to areas of a city with perfect streets. Think shady sides walnut street. But prices are too high. So we all sit in our traffic. Eat our KFC. And imagine a world with more streets. Less Stroads.

Id rather walk.
